W9 Exercise – Delay

The effect I chose was a Delay, due to its simplicity and prevalence.

Step 1

The delay seems to mimic the sound of excessively large spaces, albeit cleaner. As suggested by the effect, there are Delays between copies of the input sound, which seem to decay in amplitude over time. The osund of the effect is very dependent on its input.

Step 2

The plugin used to test this step is Fruity Delay 3, using FL studio. I only had time to test a Sine and Saw wave input.

The first ‘impulse’ is the original, dry signal, whilst the second is a product of the delay. Interestingly, whilst this impulse is a short, 3/4 cycle waveform, we can see that the delayed version has a lower amplitude for the first cycle.

Viewing a white noise impulse (I hesitate to call it that, its quite long for an impulse), we can see that frequencies closer to ~15kHz decay slower than other frequencies.
